Medford Public Library and the Royall House and Slave Quarters are inviting you to a conversation with novelist Michael Curato about his award winning book, Flamer. Set in 1995 at a Boy Scouts summer camp, Flamer, tells the story of Aiden, a 14 year old who is on a journey of figuring himself and his sexuality out. Semi-autobiographical, Curato’s courageous book was met with controversy, topping many banned book lists. Join us for an intimate discussion about the importance of telling queer and BIPOC stories and the fight to bring awareness to the banning of books in our schools and libraries. The discussion will be followed by audience Q&A and light refreshments provided by Boukan’nen (a locally Black owned business).
Free giveaways will be provided to the first 25 guests who arrive, and book signing will occur at the event’s end.
Registration is required. Registration begins on September 1.
When someone does not show up for a program they are registered for, they are taking away an opportunity for another member of the community. Patrons who are registered for an event they cannot attend are asked to cancel their registration at least 24 hours in advance. Failure to show up for programs two (2) times without notice will be grounds for being waitlisted for 90 days. Patrons who arrive 10 minutes or more after the program start time will be considered no-shows. They may be denied access after that time, and their spot may be given away to people on the waiting list.
