Pathfinders

A pathfinder is a topic-specific resource curated by your teen librarians to help you get started with your research projects. We have a growing list of pathfinders to help you navigate our physical book collection and electronic resources!

Databases

You have access to a wide variety of databases through the Minuteman Library Network. You can find the complete list here, but we’ve pulled out a select few that are teen-specific. Some resources will require you to enter your library card number to sign in.

Britannica Middle School – Offers high-quality online learning materials that have been developed by teachers and curriculum experts.

Britannica Young Adult – Contains magazine articles, a homework help section, a world atlas, Merriam-Webster dictionaries and thesauri, a Spanish-English dictionary, and video and audio content.

Middle School in Context – Academic articles, images, topic selections and more for Middle Schoolers.

Onefile High School Edition – Find information on high school research topics plus pop culture, sports, and more the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more.

Pop Culture Collection – This collection provides useful information for any researcher in a social science, history, art or liberal arts course. This collection is made up of 100 subject-appropriate full-text periodicals.

Communications and Mass Media Collection – This collection provides information from more than 100 journals focused on  the communications field. Key subjects covered include: marketing, advertising and public relations, literature and writing, linguistics, and more.

Fine Arts and Music Collection – With more than 100 full-text magazines and journals covered in databases such as the Wilson Art Index and RILM, this collection provide resources to support research in areas such as drama, music, art history, and filmmaking.

Literature Resource Center – Find up-to-date biographical information, overviews, full-text literary criticism and reviews on more than 130,000 writers in all disciplines, from all time periods and from around the world.

NoveList – Not sure what to read next? Find read-a-likes, recommendations, and more, all curated by librarians and publishing insiders.

Biography in Context – Provides information and insight into the world’s most influential people. This resource combines biographical information with multimedia and articles to present lives in context. 

Digital Commonwealth Historical Collections – This site provides access to photographs, manuscripts, books, audio recordings, and other materials of historical interest that have been digitized and made available by members of Digital Commonwealth, a statewide consortium of libraries, museums, archives, and historical societies from across Massachusetts.

Global Issues in Context – Offers international viewpoints on a broad spectrum of global issues, and current events. Portals bring together a variety of sources for analysis of social, political, military, economic, environmental, health, and cultural issues. 

Milestone Documents in American History – This database pairs primary source documents with analytical essays and commentary, providing students of history a full understanding of each document’s importance and historical context.

Opposing Issues in Context – Covers timely issues, from capital punishment to immigration to marijuana. This cross-curricular resource supports science, social studies, current events, and language arts classes. Informed, differing views help learners develop critical-thinking skills and draw their own conclusions.

U.S. History in Context – This resource combines content from reference sources with with full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites.

World History in Context – Combines content from reference sources with with full-text magazines, academic journals, news articles, primary source documents, images, videos, audio files and links to vetted websites.

Environmental Studies and Policy Collection – This collection provides multiple viewpoints of the field of environmental issues and policy including perspectives from the scientific community, governmental policy makers, as well as corporate interests.

Health and Medicine – Articles on: Fitness, Pregnancy, Medicine, Nutrition, Diseases, Public Health, Occupational Health & Safety, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, HMOs, Prescription Drugs, and more. 

Health and Wellness Resource Center – Includes health/medical journals, numerous reference volumes, health videos from Healthology, Inc., pamphlets and health-related articles from general interest publications, in addition to a broad collection of Gale reference titles.

Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Collection – This collection covers the fields of physical therapy and sports medicine, providing researchers with access to topics discussed in the field, including proven treatment techniques, experimental research theses, and many more.

Science in Context – Science In Context provides topic overviews, experiments, biographies, pictures and illustrations, as well as articles from over 200 magazines and academic journals and links to quality web sites. 

Mango Languages – Mango is designed to equip you with conversational abilities from the very start. Mango immerses you in real, everyday conversations in a wide variety of foreign languages. It also features ESL instruction in English, tailored for speakers of more than a dozen languages.

You have access to a wide variety of streaming options through the Minuteman Library Network. You can find ebooks, audiobooks, music, movies, and more.
